1875<3CN> Three Cent Nickel--Double Struck in Collar--PR64 PCGS. Proof coins were struck in limited quantities in the 19th century, essentially making each coin an individual, unique item of manufacture. Proofs, like gold coins, were carefully examined and errors are extremely rare. By definition, a proof received a minimum of two strikes. What makes the present three cent nickel so unusual is that the obverse die rotated a couple of degrees clockwise between strikes. Liberty's profile and UNITED STATES display dramatic doubling. The reverse (anvil) die was fixed, thus the reverse is undoubled. The surfaces are brilliant and deeply reflective. Only 700 or so proofs were produced, and undoubtedly this is the only coin that escaped the mint with this defect.
From The Henderson Collection of U.S. Gold Errors.
