1875<3CN> PR64 NGC. Delicate golden-gray iridescence complements both surfaces. A small die chip on Liberty's cheek has an appearance of an imperfectly shaped "1." The obverse shows bold cameo contrast, while on the reverse, the mirror-quality of the field is partially subdued. This is a feature that is typical of many nickel three cent pieces seen. Evidently the minters were often eager to maintain the blazing mirror-quality of the obverse, but tended to ignore the subdued mirror-quality of the reverse. Since nickel is a very hard metal, it is likely that the dies would have required polishing after just a few hundred impressions in order to insure that the fields maintained their deep reflectivity. This is a step that the Mint evidently didn't always have the time or inclination to take.
