1875<$3> Three Dollar, Judd-1437, High R.7, (Proof 60 Cleaned) PR63 SEGS. 39.1 grains. A regular dies trial piece for the three dollar gold piece. Struck in aluminum and gilt with a reeded edge. Saul Teichman notes that: "The die trials of this date often have been gilded due to the extreme rarity of its gold counterpart." Of course, the 1875 three dollar is one of the great rarities among 19th century U.S. gold. That rarity has an approximate survivorship in the range of 31-33 pieces in all grades (all proofs), an uncertain number of which are restrikes. This pattern is much rarer than a proof 1875 three dollar, but because it is not struck in gold alloy it is not valued as highly by as wide an audience as a gold coin. This piece is obviously gilt with each side somewhat dull gold in color, as one would expect from a gilt coin. The surfaces show a curious fine-grain texture, which we attribute to the gilding process and the coin appears to have been lightly cleaned at one time. A bit softly struck over the highpoints of the design, but there are no obvious or distracting marks present.
