1875 25C PR66 NGC. Ex: P. Kaufman. Briggs 5-F. With a lump (as struck) on the left reverse shield border, this coin was struck from the same die that the Mint used to produce the proof 1872 Quarter in the Kaufman Collection. Writing in 1991, Larry Briggs (The Comprehensive Encyclopedia of United States Liberty Seated Quarters) opined that the 1875 is the rarest proof Seated Quarter of the 1870s-1880s. Indeed, our offering of Gem quality survivors over the last decade has been limited, with only a few coins passing through our hands in the last couple of years. The present specimen is among the finest certified, and it is overlaid in rich, scintillating, champagne-lilac iridescence that lightens a little on the obverse. Needle sharp striking definition and glassy fields characterize both sides of this smooth, virtually pristine Gem. Population: 6 in 66, there are only five finer (7/02).From the Philip Kaufman Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
