1875<20C> Twenty Cents, Judd-1396, Pollock-1539, High R.7, PR65 NGC. Struck in silver with a plain edge. Liberty by the Seashore is the name most often give to this obverse design. The reverse has the denomination expressed in fractional form as "1/5 of a Dollar." According to Andrew Pollock: "This design has been the object of much mirth with collectors, because although the smoke is trailing behind the ship, the sails are billowed in the forward direction, a fact first pointed out Q. David Bowers." It seems to us that the smoke should actually appear to rise straight up. The wind is blowing to the east and billowing the sails, causing the ship to move at a similar speed. The wind is also therefore blowing the smoke forward, but the motion of the ship in the water should counteract this, causing the smoke to rise. Of course, in reality the design is actually properly executed, in our opinion, as the smoke from the stack indicates the use of supplemental power moving the ship at a much faster speed than the wind, thus the smoke should be trailing behind as it is depicted. This example is a Gem Proof with exceptional mirrored fields and delightful light gold toning.
