1875 20C MS67 NGC. First year of the type and also of 1875[20C] MS67 NGC.
1875<20C> MS67 NGC. First year of the type and also of this denomination, which only saw production for circulation in 1875 and 1876. The following two years saw production only of proof examples before the denomination was discontinued in its entirety. The strongly prooflike surfaces are covered with a veneer of medium intensity cobalt-blue and lavender patination. The design elements are sharply struck, except for the star centers along the right border. The NGC Census indicates that four examples of this date have received the coveted MS67 grade, but none have ever been given a higher grading number.
In some instances, the distinction between Mint State and Proof coins is not precise or clearly defined. Jules Reiver included this coin with Proof examples of 1876, 1877, and 1878. On the other hand, this cataloger agrees with the assessment by NGC that it is a superb gem Mint State example of the date. The fields are fully prooflike, but not deeply so, although the toning tends to mask the reflective qualities. The strike is sharp, but not full. Perhaps the biggest distinction is around the periphery, especially the obverse. The border dentils appear to blend into the field. This slight blending or merging is normally not seen on Proof coins, but only on Mint State examples.
