1875<20C> Cameo PR67 Cameo NGC. An awe-inspiring example of this premier Twenty Cent issue, one with a misleadingly high proof mintage of 2,790 pieces. Not all of these specimens appear to have been released, however, with Breen (1977) noting that 590 coins were still in Mint holdings on January 1, 1876. Their fate is not known with certainty, but the fact that an 1875 proof Twenty Cent Piece is actually of comparable scarcity to lower mintage dates suggests that melting on the authority of Mint officials is a likely scenario. Breen also reports only one die marriage among survivors, this being most readily identified by a series of random, arcing striations in the obverse field around Liberty's head. A quick tilt of this Superb specimen quickly confirms their presence. The dramatic contrast displayed on both sides is given even greater appeal by peerless, glassy fields and rings of coppery-orange and steel-blue peripheral toning. Expect a great deal of interest in this imposing quality first year proof. Population: 3 in 67 Cameo, 0 finer (8/05).
