1875 $20 MS63 NGC.<p>In Uncirculated grades, the 1875 is the third most common Type Two issue, trailing only the 1873 Open 3 and the 1876-S. The 1875 is actually a scarcer coin than the 1873 Open 3 or the 1876-S in very high grades (in this case MS 63 and above) and it is nearly impossible to locate above MS63. Viewed as a type, the Double Eagles from 1866 to 1876 are much rarer in high grades than their Type One or Type Three counterparts. There is a logical explanation for this. The majority of choice Type One Double Eagles are from hoards such as the S. S. Central America. Beginning in the mid-to-late 1880s, quantities of high quality Twenty Dollar gold pieces were shipped overseas and a number of them were well preserved. This has made certain Type Three dates readily available in MS63 to MS65 grades. But Type Two issues appear to have either been used extensively in commerce or handled very roughly. Coupled with the fact that many issues are poorly struck, the Type Two is easily the most difficult of the three Liberty Head issues to locate in Choice Uncirculated and most dates are unknown above the MS 62 to MS 63 range. This piece has thick mint frost and is generally well struck throughout. The surfaces are lightly abraded but show a couple of alloy spots on and in front of the neck of Liberty. There is a grease stain (as struck) between stars 6 and 7. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
