1875 $20 --Altered Surface--NCS. Impaired Proof. 1875 is one of the rarest dates for collectors of Philadelphia Mint gold coins. All proof denominations are very rare, of course, but the business issues are also extremely difficult, from the gold dollar to the eagle. Only the 1875 double eagle has a reasonable business strike production. However, just 20 proofs were struck, and Breen (1988) opines that "possibly 8-10 proofs survive." The last appearance of a proof 1875 double eagle in a Heritage auction was in our 2001 ANA Atlanta Signature, as part of the fabulous Genaitis collection of 1875 coinage. The present piece is precisely struck, and the frosted devices exhibit pleasing cameo contrast with the lightly hairlined fields. The opportunity to acquire a proof 1875 twenty seldom occurs, and years may pass before another affordable piece arrives on the market.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
