1875<$2 1/2> AU50 PCGS. The 1875 date, regardless of denomination, has a mystique that aficionados of rare-date gold instantly recognize. From the eagle on downward through the half and quarter eagle, the three dollar gold and the gold dollar, every 1875-dated gold coin is rare, solely excepting the common 1875 double eagles. Business-strike mintages were incredibly tiny: gold dollar, 400; quarter eagle, 400; half eagle, 200; and eagle, 100. Only 20 pieces of the proof-only 1875 three dollar gold were produced. The Garrett-Guth gold Encyclopedia estimates that only 20 to 30 circulation strikes exist, most of them in XF or AU condition, such as the present specimen. Because of the minute mintage, this specimen, like all known examples, has deeply prooflike fields under the light, grade-consistent contact marks and light wear. The color is a beautiful, mellow antique gold, with tinges of hazel on the central devices. Circulation strikes show the 5 in the date much lower: On proof examples (20 were produced), the 5 in the date is much higher, nearly touching the bust truncation. Population: 6 in 50, 22 finer (9/06).
From The Clifton Rodenburg Collection.
