1875 1st Edition Wigwam and War Path by Meacham
Featured in this lot is an 1875 first edition, Wigwam and War-Path; or the Royal Chief in Chains by Hon A. B. Meacham. Meacham was the U.S. Superintendent of Indian Affairs in Oregon from 1869-1872 and was a proponent of interests. In 1873, he was appointed to chairman of the Modoc Peace Commission. The book chronicles much of his work with the Native American Indians in the Northwest. It contains numerous illustrations of actual scenes from Modoc Indian Life, as witnessed by the author. So, despite the "second and revised edition" labeling, the 1875 publication is the first and original edition of Wigwam and War-Path as a stand alone book. The use of such a label likely indicates that Meacham incorporated revisions or additional content based on his previous writings or experiences, leading to this more comprehensive work. The condition of this book is well preserved with some slight wear to the leather wrapped cover with little wear to the corners and the spine. The book shows some browning to the pages, but otherwise it is well preserved. The measurements of this book are 9 1/4" x 6 1/2" x 2 3/4". The collective weight of this book is 3lb 10oz.*
