1875<$10> VF35 PCGS. Like several representatives we have offered (most more than a decade ago) of this important With Motto Ten Dollar, the example offered here shows moderate to heavy wear that has all but obliterated the original prooflike surface. The coin is coated in a natural reddish patina and shows the expected number of evenly distributed abrasions. An old scratch to the right of star 5 that advances down toward Liberty's nose is useful as a marker.
The 1875 Eagle, like the other smaller denomination gold coins from 1875, saw only token production at the Philadelphia facility in a year when efforts were almost exclusively concentrated on the minting of Double Eagles. As a result, it is a high profile rarity in the series of Coronet Tens and among the most sought-after gold issues from the second half of the 19th century. Only 100 business strikes and 20 proofs were produced, and survivors in each category are predictably rare. In what is still a meaningful analysis, Akers' 18-year-old comprehensive auction survey found that the 1875 eagle had fewer auction appearances than any other issue of the denomination. It is doubtful that more than 12-15 business strikes survive today and some of those identified as such may actually be circulated proofs.
