1874-S<T$1> MS65 NGC. The San Francisco Mint produced 2,549,000 Trade Dollars in 1874, the first of the so-called common dates, although this issue is hardly common in Gem Mint State. This record mintage up to that time hardly translates to a common coin today. Nearly every Trade Dollar struck in 1874 at the San Francisco Mint served its intended purpose and was exported to China where most were either melted or chopmarked. Mint State coins are quite scarce, and Gem quality coins are excessively rare. Indeed, NGC has certified only two coins at the MS65 level, and PCGS a mere one. No coins are known in higher grades.
The current specimen is bursting with luster that is overlaid with a thin veneer of light tan patina. Except for softness in the hair over Liberty's ear and on the upper right wing of the eagle, the design features are well impressed. The surfaces are silky smooth and well preserved, revealing just a few scattered light marks. A truly exceptional Trade dollar that is worthy of a generous bid. Census: 2 in 65, 0 finer (10/05).
From The Albert E. Willis Collection.
