1874-S<T$1> MS64 PCGS. The San Francisco Mint produced 2,549,000 Trade Dollars in 1874, the first of the so-called common dates, although this issue is hardly common in Choice or Gem Mint State. This record mintage up to that time hardly translates to a common coin today. Nearly every Trade Dollar struck in 1874 at the San Francisco Mint served its intended purpose and was exported to China where most were either melted or chopmarked. Today, this issue with chopmarks is the third most common. Choice Mint State coins, however, are quite rare, and Gem quality coins are excessively rare. This example has dark ivory-brown color on the obverse with peripheral iridescent toning on the obverse. The reverse has mostly light gold color over satiny luster. The surfaces are lightly abraded as expected at this grade level. Population: 21 in 64, 1 finer (8/05).
From The Daniel D. Biddle Collection, Part One.
