1874-S $20 MS61 NGC.<p>The 1874-S is one of the more available San Francisco Type Two Double Eagles, but it is far scarcer in high grades than the 1875-S and 1876-S. This is an issue that is usually seen with a poor strike and many show very soft detail on the hair of Liberty. Poor eye appeal also plagues the 1874-S and most Uncirculated pieces have excessively abraded surfaces. This is an interesting piece, if for no other reason than because of the mismatched obverse and reverse. The obverse shows the numerous small abrasions that one would expect from a coin in this grade, and yes, it does not rate very high in the eye appeal department. However, flip it over and the reverse is bright, flashy, and semi-prooflike. Graded on its own, the reverse would probably rate at least two and perhaps three points higher than the obverse. Well struck throughout with rich orange-gold coloration. There are 200 or so pieces known in Mint State with close to 90% of these in the MS60-61 range. As with so many issues of this type, the 1874-S is very rare in properly graded MS62 and examples are extremely rare above this. The best we have auctioned was the NGC MS63 in the 1998 ANA Sale that realized $18,975. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium.
