This is a historical register and official Annual Report of the Commissioner of Indian Affairs to the Secretary of the Interior for the year 1874. Produced by the Washington Government Printing Office dated for 1874. The book measures about 9” tall x 6” wide, its outer boards worn and nicked, interior pages are clean with a lovely colorful folding Map measuring about 9” tall x 12” wide at front. It is basically a census of the US Native American Indian populations in the various States. A lovely colorful Map of the Western regions of the US are shown primarily to the west of the Mississippi River with all the Indian Reservation territories being in color. This is a rare and highly detailed informative book. It apparently lists every Indian Tribe in 1874, the government agency it belongs to, who's in charge, and a description of the general overall state of the Tribes. The Indian’s state of affairs are reported very significantly different from tribe to tribe. Many tribes are reported to prosper on good land, having good schools. Tribes on land with poor soil and no resources, struggle. The Commissioners agree selling whiskey must be stopped. It is reported that Indians don't understand personal wealth, and they tend to sell everything at too low prices. Indian Affairs has created a huge “welfare state” with its subsidies and don't know how to make them. Most tribes are small but the large Sioux tribe won't budge. Reports include mention of Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, along with Cochise’ death. Also listed is every Treaty signed and its date, plus vastly Much More. Attractive Hardcovers in green leather and colorful marbled wraps with gold gilt spine with title: “REPORT ON INDIAN AFFAIRS. - 1874”.
