1874-CC<T$1> MS64 PCGS. In his Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States, Bowers states that: "The 1874-CC is one of the rarest of all trade dollars in high Mint State grades (MS64 or better); very few are known to exist. This because of the familiar syndrome: collectors did not save mintmarks, trade dollars were not in favor with numismatists...and most coins were exported." The PCGS and NGC population reports would seem to substantiate Bowers' assertion. Indeed, the two services combined have certified only 25 coins of this issue in MS64, with just six pieces grading higher (10/05). The current coin has a blend of gray, gold, magenta, and aqua patina bathing lustrous surfaces. Except for the star centers along the lower right obverse border, and the feathers on the eagle's left leg, the design features are well impressed. The grade is determined by small marks on Liberty's cheek, neck, and left breast, and in the obverse fields. Population: 11 in 64, 2 finer (10/05).
