1874-CC $5 AU58 PCGS. Variety 1-C. Doug Winter, in his Gold Coins of the Old West, identifies two obverse dies and four reverse dies for the 1874-CC five dollar. The current coin is attributed as 1-C, based on the thin die scratch through the I in LIBERTY and the position of the mintmark. Based on Winter's attribution notes, the current coin must be an early die state as the reverse clash marks are not present, nor are the four raised die scratches above the eagle's right wing as found on later die states for the variety. 1-C is considered to be a slightly better variety for this date. Of course, with fewer than 100 examples known in all grades, the 1874-CC five is desirable regardless of die variety. The surfaces show a significant amount of mint luster on each side. The rich orange-gold color has no trace of red or lilac color, as often found. Sharply defined in all areas and devoid of any mentionable abrasions. This is one of the finest examples extant of this scarce, early Carson City five. Population: 8 in 58, 2 finer (7/07).

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
