1874-CC $20 AU50 PCGS. This is the first of the so-cal
1874-CC<$20> AU50 PCGS. This is the first of the so-called "common date" Carson City Mint double eagles, with a production total of 115,085 coins, the first issue to reach the 100,000 coin mark. As the Mint increased production across the board, a new Superintendent was appointed. James Crawford was previously a member of the Nevada state legislature from 1866 to 1873, and he served his position at the Mint from 1874 until 1885, the longest tenure of any to hold that post, literally half of the Mint's entire life.
No distinct die varieties have been reported for this date, although it seems likely that several different obverse and reverse dies were actually used. Although this coinage issue is usually available in circulated grades from VF to AU, these pieces are difficult to find with good eye appeal. This example is a brilliant yellow-gold example with wispy rose toning. The surfaces are lightly abraded, and retain considerable prooflike appearance. It is a highly appealing example housed in an older green-label holder.
From The Wyoming Collection.
