1874-CC $10 AU53 PCGS. Winter 1-A, the only known dies. Eagle production at the Carson City Mint ratcheted up to 16,767 pieces in 1874. This is a respectable total for the decade, and, indeed, the '74-CC is the most plentiful Carson City Eagle from the 1870s. A small hoard of 20-30 pieces entered the numismatic market in the mid-1990s. Most of these coins graded VF or XF, the two most prevalent grades among extant '74-CC Eagles. As a result, this issue remains elusive above the XF45 level with just 10-12 pieces believed extant in AU (per Winter and Halperin, 2001). This is a mostly lustrous survivor with ample remnants of a modest semi-prooflike finish. This is a curious feature, inasmuch as Winter states that most high grade examples are richly frosted in texture. Regardless, the already impressive eye appeal benefits even further from layers of green-gold and orange-gold colors. Moderately abraded with an identifying reverse scrape below the right scroll end. A similarly graded '74-CC Eagle sold for $10,350 as lot 1547 in Bowers and Merena's October 1999 sale of the Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection. Although not the Bass example, the present coin is every bit its equal from a technical standpoint. From the Ashland City Collection.
