1874 Assay Commission Medal. PR63 Brown Uncertified. Ju
1874 Assay Commission Medal. PR63 Brown Uncertified. Julian AC-13, R.5. Copper, 33.6 mm., 206.8 grains. The obverse design of Archimedes is identical to the 1871 medal without the director's name in exergue. The reverse is essentially the same as the 1873 medal, except the inscription on the casket has been changed to J. TORREY, OB. MAR. 10,-73. Professor John Torrey was a chemist who had been appointed to the Assay Commission on 13 different occasions, beginning in 1842. It appears that the copper medals of 1874 are scarcer than those struck in silver. It also seems to be the case that these medals were produced on much thinner planchets than most contemporary copper assay medals. This example is a splendid piece with satin surfaces and mahogany-brown color accented by tinges of original red on the reverse.
Ex: Saccone Sale (Bowers and Merena, 11/1989), lot 3464.
