<B>1874 50C Arrows PR65 Cameo NGC.</B></I> An amazing example of the short-lived With Arrows design type that was only struck for part of 1873 and all of 1874. The arrows are left and right of the date, and signify a slight reduction in the standard weight for the issue, in accordance with the Coinage Act of February 12, 1873.<BR> This legislation was known as the "Crime of 73" in some circles. Although slight, the weight reduction was intended to bring the value of silver coins in line with prevailing market prices. It resulted in countless earlier coins being melted by hoarders for their bullion content, further diminishing the availability of silver coins in commerce at a time when such coins were already scarcely seen.<BR> This proof has exceptional eye appeal created by intense contrast between the lustrous devices and deeply mirrored fields. All of the designs are fully detailed, and the surfaces are brilliant with no toning.
