1874 50C Arrows PR65 Cameo NGC. The brief design type issued in 1873 and 1874 has arrows placed beside the date to indicate a change in the standard weight of the silver coinage. Similar design modifications appeared on the dimes and quarters struck in these two years. The actual weight change was so slight that it was virtually undetectable, less than one grain for the half dollars. While some 1873 half dollars were coined at both weight standards, all 1874 half dollars were produced at the new standard. Walter Breen wrote in his Complete Encyclopedia: "This was nothing but a paper complication, requiring at most a microscopic adjustment in thickness of rolled strip from which blanks were to be cut for stamping into coins."
This stunning Gem has deeply mirrored fields on both sides with lustrous devices providing excellent cameo contrast. The obverse has ivory color at the center, surrounded by gold, blue, and lilac toning. The reverse is mostly brilliant with hints of gold toning near the borders. It is a sharply detailed and highly attractive example. Census: 3 in 65 Cameo, 3 finer (1/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
