1874 $5 MS62 NGC. Previously offered as lot 2269 in our recent Long Beach Bullet Sale, where it was described as, "Half Eagle production at the Philadelphia Mint plummeted to just 3,508 pieces in 1874. A significant rarity in the long-lived Liberty series, the '74-P is equally as elusive as the 1869, 1870, and 1871. It is also a noteworthy condition rarity, with most survivors grading VF-XF and just six Mint State examples known to the two major grading services. This Condition Census representative displays (under a loupe) the reverse doubling on UNITED STATES that distinguished business strike 1874 Half Eagles from their similarly dated proof counterparts. The finish is noticeably prooflike with glassy fields and sharp, frosty devices. A smattering of light to moderate abrasions account for the MS62 designation, among which are a few moderate marks in the reverse field at the tip of the uppermost arrowhead that should help trace the pedigree of this important Liberty Half Eagle."
