<B>1874 $3 MS61 NGC.</B></I> The 1874 three dollar had a relatively high mintage of 41,800 business strikes. Much of the reason for these high numbers, according to Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, was the "... destruction and recoinage of old gold coins, mandated in the Mint Act of 1873." The bright, brassy-gold surfaces of the present example display the most potent luster in the interstices of, and the areas around, the sharply impressed design elements.
