1874 25C Arrows PR64 Cameo NGC. Few 19th century
1874<25C> Arrows PR64 Cameo NGC. Few 19th century type coins have the enduring popularity of the various Arrows issues from the 1850s and 1870s. This design motif was added in each case to indicate a weight change; in the first instance a weight reduction, and in the second case an almost insignificant increase in weight. The arrowheads were only on 1873 and 1874 coins when the Mint converted its planchets to the metric system. In 1873 the arrows are level, and in 1874 they point slightly upward--for some reason that is lost to us today. This is an exceptionally pleasing coin that has deeply reflective fields and a moderate amount of mint frost over the devices, which yields a noticeable contrast on each side. Nearly brilliant, the surfaces show just a bit of light peripheral color, that effect being noticeably deeper in hue on the reverse. Population: 3 in 64, 10 finer (5/05).
