1873 Winchester carbine .44-40 cal., with all features as standard on carbine except left side plate inscribed "W.H. Carr Ft. Smith, Ark 1887", serial #134062A. The carbine remains in good original condition showing agood patina finish with hints of blue mixed in. The metal surfaces show light to moderate erosion and pinprick pitting. The stocks show wear from carry, pared down around the metal and show some lightrefinishing years ago; some dings, mars and gouges. The action is good, the front sight has been bent from being dropped as has the rear sight; bore is somewhat rough. The engraving is stylistically correct andappears to be of the period and this carbine has been in a prominent Florida collection for decades. William H. "Bill" Carr was a Deputy Marshal of the Indian Territory. He worked with Marshal Nix and was in a gunbattle with the Daltons. His reputation is soiled by friendships with outlaws. He served as a Deputy Marshal until the mid-1890s when he was indicted for assisting the Christian brothers in their escape. Carr
