1873<T$1> Trade Dollar, Judd-1329, Pollock-1474, High R.7, PR64 PCGS. From regular issue dies, but struck in white metal with a reeded edge. An extremely rare pattern, PCGS has certified only two pieces, this and a PR60. NGC has not encapsulated an example of the Judd variety. Judd-1329 is confirmed as a dies trial, rather than a delicacy created for collectors. uspatterns.com quotes from a July 11, 1873 letter that Mint Superintendent James Pollock wrote to Mint Director Henry Linderman: "I send you specimen of trade dollar in tin struck today. We will commence the regular coinage of trade $ in a few hours. The enclosed will give you a tolerably correct idea of the silver dollar." This pinpoint-sharp specimen has attractive field reflectivity, and although both sides exhibit die rust and die striations (as made), post-strike contact is nearly absent. A wonderful addition to an advanced Trade Dollar collection. An opportunity to acquire this extremely rare pattern, particularly in desirable condition, may not arise again for many years.
