1873 T$1 PR64 Cameo PCGS. Struck from an early die state of the so-called "Patched Letters Reverse," the diagnostics of the die are: 1. Raised fragment within the loop of the D in UNITED. 2. The tops of the E in STATES and the F in OF have been repaired. 3. Rough, unfinished areas in the field at the bottom of the eagle's tail. 4. Numerous die polish lines (as struck) are scattered in the field. The first proof Trade Dollars were prepared at the Philadelphia Mint in July 1873. The exact number of coins produced that year is not known with certainty. According to the Annual Report of the Director of the Mint, 600 pieces were delivered. Harry X. Boosel, however, located internal Mint records that placed the total number of proof 1873 Trade Dollars produced at 865 coins. What we do know for certain is that the 1873 is the rarest proof Trade Dollar of the 1873-1883 era. Since this issue is believed to have been unpopular with collectors at the time of delivery, many coins were likely melted as unsold. It is also probable that a decent percentage of the original mintage was spent. Not so the present specimen. Well frosted and sharp, the devices are set against a reflective background that shimmers beneath mottled silver-gray and tan-russet shades. There are few outwardly distracting blemishes, and a small lintmark (as struck) in the reverse field at the eagle's right (facing) wing is the only worthwhile pedigree marker. NGC and PCGS combined have certified just five examples at the PR64 Cameo level, and there is just one Cameo coin finer (7/02).From the Andy Geosits Collection of Trade Dollars.
