1873<T$1> PR64 Cameo PCGS. A very attractive specimen of this first year of issue in Proof. Toned with speckled gold and blue over the obverse and reverse, with the centers brighter silver in color. Likely one of the first struck as the dies retain their most contrast when they are first prepared, and lose much of the frost on the devices as coinage continues. For the 1873 Trade dollar, perhaps fifteen percent show the desirable Cameo contrast, with just a couple of coins showing the Deep Cameo contrast (PCGS has graded just 1 example as such) for the entire issue. This is the so called "patched letters" reverse and is identified by the raised die lump in the middle of the curved portion of the D of UNITED, a rough, unfinished area below the eagle's tail. Obvious care was taken in preparing the dies although there are two curious points which are worth noting. The first are heavy die lines which thread their way through the lower folds in Liberty's skirt, just above her feet, and these lines are very prominent extending from the ocean to her bail of cotton. A second area to study is Liberty's left arm, which has a couple of raised lumps on the upper portion, possibly from die rust. Population: 5 in 64, 1 finer (12/05).
From The Andy Geosits Collection of Trade Dollars.
