1873-S<T$1> MS64 PCGS. Almost immediately after they were authorized and production began, it was realized that the San Francisco Mint would be the logical location for Trade Dollar coinage, as most of these coins would be exported to the Orient. The mintage totaled 703,000 coins, and nearly all of them were exported and eventually melted or chopmarked. Today, this issue is rare in high-grades, but quite common with chopmarks. This brilliant example has light champagne color over the entire surface on both sides with satiny luster. Minor striations are visible, mostly on the reverse, from the planchet preparation process. In addition, fine vertical die finishing lines are visible in the fields on both sides. Population: 19 in 64, 3 finer (8/05).
