1873-S 50C Arrows MS65 PCGS. While the 1873-CC and 1874-CC deliveries garner considerable attention among collectors, few realize that there are other branch mint issues of the 1873-1874 Arrows Half that are condition rarities in their own right. The 1873-S is one of those issues. The only surviving Half Dollars with this date and mintmark combination are from the 228,000-piece Arrows delivery. All of the 5,000 No Arrows 1873-S Half Dollars listed in federal records are believed to have been melted at the Mint after passage of the Coinage Act of 1873. Writing in 1993 (The Complete Guide to Liberty Seated Half Dollars), Randy Wiley and Bill Bugert report a single die marriage for the 1873-S Arrows delivery. This is characterized by, among other features, a minute S mintmark on the reverse below the eagle. The authors assign this issue an R7+ rating in Mint State and describe such coins as "extremely rare." This is only the second MS65 PCGS representative of the 1873-S Arrows Half that this cataloger has seen. (The other example realized $36,800 as lot 6854 in our FUN Signature Sale of three years ago.) Razor sharp striking definition is seen throughout, although we note that the outermost pair of leaves on the reverse olive branch are somewhat attenuated from excessive die polishing. Swirls of pale tan-gold patina drift over both sides in a mottled fashion, and they are most readily evident on the reverse. The mint luster is full, and there is nary a distracting abrasion to report. Pedigree concerns compel us to mention three tiny obverse spots: along the outside of Liberty's left (facing) forearm, at the base of the index finger on the same hand, and within the lower loop of the 3 in the date. NGC and PCGS report only six 1873-S Arrows Halves in MS65, with none finer (10/02). Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
