1873-S $20 Open 3 MS61 NGC.<p>The 1873-S Open 3 is the rarest San Francisco Type Two Double Eagle in terms of the total number known. As recently as a decade ago, it was one of the rarest Type Two issues in higher grades, but a number have turned up recently in overseas hoards. However, it still remains quite rare in Uncirculated with between 25 and 35 pieces known. Almost every Mint State 1873-S Open 3 Double Eagle is a very heavily abraded MS60, and many examples graded as such have dark, "dirty gold" color. We have only seen a tiny handful of coins graded better than MS60 and just one that graded MS62. This variety remains arguably underrated and overlooked by rare gold collectors. This piece is atypical for the issue, lacking the aforementioned "dirty gold" color usually seen, instead exhibiting medium orange-gold coloration with lightly abraded surfaces. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium.
