A crisply struck and satiny Type Two Double Eagle with original apricot-gold color and typically marked surfaces for the grade. According to Walter Breen's <I>Encyclopedia,</B></I> Chief Coiner Archibald Loudon Snowden filed a formal complaint to Mint Director James Pollock on January 18, 1873 about the logotype of the 3 in the date, which to the naked eye (especially on smaller denominations) closely resembled an 8. Pollock requested engraver William Barber to create Open 3 punches for the various denominations. For the 1873 Philadelphia Double Eagle, the Closed 3 is scarcer because the punch was changed early in the year. The Open 3 1873-S, however, is much tougher than its Closed 3 counterpart, since the Philadelphia-made dies arrived later due to the geographical distance between the two coasts. Population: 29 in 61, 3 finer (11/03). </FONT></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><BR><A name=PricesRealized></A><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" bgColor=#000000 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%"><TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=3 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%" bgColor=#79735c><A name=PR><FONT face=arial color=#ffffff size=3><B>Previous Prices from Heritage Auctions</B> </FONT></A></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#f6f6ed><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=1><TBODY><TR><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Date</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Service</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Price</B></TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>06/10/2003</B></TD><TD width="33%">NGC</TD><TD width="33%">$7,187.50</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>01/12/2002</B></TD><TD width="33%">NGC</TD><TD width="33%">$5,462.50</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>12/03/1993</B></TD><TD width="33%">NGC</TD><TD width="33%">$6,160.00</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff><FONT face=arial size=1 ?>PLEASE NOTE: All prices realized reflect the final hammer price PLUS the buyer's premium in auctions that charge a buyer's premium. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. </span></font></tr></table></td></tr></table>
