1873-S<$2 1/2> MS63 PCGS. Although perhaps not the extreme rarity in Mint State grades it might once have been considered to be, the 1873-S quarter eagle is undeniably rare in Select grades and extremely difficult to find finer. The present piece is only the second Heritage has ever offered in a grade above MS61, the other being an NGC-graded MS63 piece which realized $6,670 in our 1998 FUN sale. This is not the same coin; indeed, a comparison shows that the reverses were struck from two different dies. This peach-gold piece has decent luster and a better than average strike for the date. Like all 1873 quarter eagles struck in San Francisco, this coin has a closed 3. Population: 9 in 63, 2 finer (7/06).
