1873-S $10 XF45 NGC. Although the Philadelphia Mi
1873-S $10 XF45 NGC. Although the Philadelphia Mint shipped four obverse dies west for production of the 1873-S Eagle, only one variety was known to Breen when his 1988 Encyclopedia went to press. The reverse die was most likely on hand in San Francisco from an earlier year. A mere 12,000 coins were struck, virtually all of which were placed into circulation on the frontier. Today, just one Mint State coin is known to the major grading services (an MS61 PCGS example), and the certified AU population is only 37 pieces (2/05). This is a rare and obviously important Choice XF representative whose moderately bright surfaces are overlaid in delicate honey and copper-gold hues. There is plenty of bold striking definition remaining, particularly in the centers, and the number of abrasions is consistent with an S-mint gold coin that saw 15 points of wear. All in all, this is an attractive representative of an issue that is seldom offered in any grade.
