1873 Indian Head Cent. Closed 3
<Our item number 107248>1873 Indian Head Cent. Closed 3. PCGS graded MS-65 Red & Brown. This coin is nearly full red and very mark free. Although it appears to be fully struck, there is a slight lack of detail on the reverse wreath, probably due to some liquid filling the dies. No real detail is missing and this observation shouldn't hold back any desirability of this wonderful coin. A few very light flyspecks are seen by the last two feathers. Pop 20; none finer at PCGS in Red Brown.

The Closed 3 dies were the first dies made early in 1873. It was A.L. Snowden, the Chief Coiner who noticed that the 3 on all denominations looked like 8's. He had the 3 in the date punches opened slightly on the remaining dies to be produced. It is unknown how many Closed 3 obverse dies were made, but the number is probably in the order of 10 to 15. Among that number are two doubled dies and the Proof die.

The Closed 3 is about 4 times rarer than the Open 3. The estimated mintage is about &f rac12; that either the 1871 or 1872 dates (PCGS # 2110).
Estimated Value $3,000-3,500.
Ex: The "Chiro" Collection.
