1873 Harper's Weekly Panic of 1873 Front Page. 11 x 15.5, two pages, dated October 18, 1873, ragged left edge, slight toning to paper, else good condition. The cover shows an allegorical President Grant as the Chief of U.S. police helping the battered lady Liberty from the rubble of the stock exchange on Wall Street. The panic of 1873 was a nationwide economic depression precipitated by the bankruptcy of the Philadelphia banking firm Jay Cooke and Company. The downturn lasted until 1877. President Grant's monetary policy of contracting the money supply didn't help matters.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
