1873<G$1> Closed 3 PR65 Cameo NGC. Garrett Collection. The 1873 gold dollar is a major rarity among 19th century U.S. gold. It is also a coin that has been infrequently offered over the decades, and one that lacked any solid scholarship until Harry X Boosel discovered that all proofs of this year are of the Closed 3 variant. In the Garrett catalog in November 1979, Bowers was careful to state his uncertainty about this coin's status as a proof or first-strike prooflike, even though he did state that this piece showed a "conspicuous unfinished feather in the headdress located below the A in STATES." Nine years later Walter Breen published this as the sole diagnostic of genuine proofs in his Complete Encyclopedia, where he stated: "have incomplete feather below T(ES)." We disagree with both and see the incomplete feather actually below the second T in STATES. Each side shows a number of lint marks from the dies having been wiped with a cloth and the lint adhering to the dies and then being transferred to the finished coin. The proof 1873 is one of the rarest coins in the entire gold dollar series. Only 25 proofs were struck and it is doubtful that more than half that number are extant today as recognizable proof strikings. The fields are nicely mirrored but lack the depth that one might expect of a proof striking from this period. Even orange-gold coloration covers each side. An extremely rare opportunity for the gold dollar collector or aficionado of 19th century proof gold. Census: 2 in 65, 0 finer (11/05).
