1873-CC T$1 MS61 NGC. The Carson City Mint inaugurated Trade Dollar production in 1873 with a rather stingy delivery of 124,500 coins. Like its similarly dated P-mint counterpart, the '73-CC appears to have seen widespread use in the Orient. Even had a decent number of coins been retained in the United States, the number of Mint State survivors in today's market would still be small. There was virtually no interest in collecting branch mint coins in the 1870s, particularly on the frontier. Inasmuch as the surfaces are free of sizeable or singularly distracting abrasions, this is an uncommonly attractive coin for the MS61 level of preservation. True, the obverse field is a little scuffy with wispy abrasions, but the overall bold strike and rich, original, copper-gray toning more than compensates for this feature. Warm apricot and lilac-blue undertones glisten at direct angles. Population: 3 in 61, 17 finer (7/02).From the Andy Geosits Collection of Trade Dollars.
