1873-CC<S$1> XF45 PCGS. Only 2,300 pieces were produced of the 1873-CC. While this is not the lowest mintage in the Carson City series (that distinction belongs to the 1871-CC), the '73-CC is the rarest of the four CC Seated dollars. It is believed by Bowers (1993) that only 750 to 1,000 pieces were actually released into circulation, with the remaining pieces apparently being melted after the Mint Act of 1873 replaced the silver dollar with the Trade dollar. The rarity of the '73-CC has been addressed by various contributors to The Gobrecht Journal, who estimate that between 40 to 60 coins are extant in all grades.
The Choice XF example presented in this lot retains excellent detail for the grade. The only weakness occurs on Liberty's head and chest, the two areas that are usually most weakly struck on this issue. Interestingly, the LIBERTY on the obverse shield is bold. Normally, this word is not as prominent on the CC-Mint Liberty Seated dollars as on the Philadelphia dollars. The silver-gray surfaces are imbued with faint iridescent rose and light green colors, and display traces of luster in the protected areas. They are remarkably clean, exhibiting just a few small obverse marks, mainly in the fields. Population: 7 in 45, 20 finer (6/05).
From The Dr. John L.
