1873-CC<S$1>--Whizzed--NCS. AU Details. The 1873-CC is considered to be the rarest Silver Dollar issue from the Carson City Mint, even though the mintage is nearly double that of the 1871-CC. The difference is that a number of the 2,300 pieces struck were likely melted by the mint after the "Crime of 1873" abolished the Silver Dollar in favor of the newly introduced Trade Dollar, also struck at Carson City later the same year. An even worse fate befell the 1873-S, since all 700 pieces struck were apparently returned to bullion. Among all Seated Dollars, only the extremely rare 1866 No Motto and 1870-S are more coveted by collectors than the 1873-CC. The present piece shows little evidence of circulation wear, but the cream-gray surfaces display an unnatural sheen from a consistently applied whizzing. Like all 1873-CC Seated Dollars, it utilizes the 1870-CC 'D' reverse die, with the second C in mintmark virtually touching the branch.
