1873-CC Liberty Seated Dollar PCGS AU55
The 1873-CC started as a low-mintage Seated Dollar with just 2,300 coins struck. Interestingly, this is not the lowest mintage Carson City Mint dollar--the 1871-CC was produced in fewer numbers. Nevertheless, the 1873-CC crops up with top rarity honors among CC-mint Seated Dollars because so many examples (too many if collectors had any choice in the matter) are believed to have been destroyed in the Mint to provide bullion for coinage of the new Trade Dollar which displaced the standard silver dollars in 1873. While it is likely that those 1873-CC pieces melted never left the Mint, it is also possible that the entire 2,300-piece mintage was distributed domestically. If this is the case, then a large number of coins must have been later redeposited with the Mint in exchange for Trade Dollars.

This is a mottled, deeply patinated example whose surfaces possess a original "old silver" appearance. The strike is pleasingly detailed, if not exactly 100% bold, and there are no sizeable or individually mentionable abrasions on either side. An impressive and rare coin, and one that stands out as a highlight among our Seated Dollar offerings in this sale. (#6972)
