1873-CC 50C No Arrows MS63 PCGS. Closed 3, WB-101. In their 1993 reference The Complete Guide to Liberty Seated Half Dollars, Randy Wiley and Bill Bugert write about the 1873-CC, "Very scarce to extremely scarce in all circulated grades. Extremely rare in Mint State." Although all 1873-CC are tough, the No Arrows variety carries a premium above the 1873-CC Arrows in all grades, probably because the significantly lower mintage of the former (122,500 pieces versus 214,560 pieces) contributes to a smaller quantity of survivors. Arrows were added to the date to denote a weight change from 12.44 to 12.50 grams, this was done to conform with the metric system and expedite foreign trade.
This lovely representative offers vibrant cartwheel luster throughout the exposed fields, and the medium golden-brown and powder-blue patina is unquestionably original. Well struck, the stars possess full centrils, and the intricate details of the eagle's claws and fletchings are complete. Only slight flatness on Liberty's thigh and left breast denies a full strike. The obverse is undisturbed by contact, and the same can be said for the reverse aside from a short pinscratch beneath the eagle's head. Along with the 1870-CC and 1871-CC, the 1873-CC No Arrows provides the key to a complete set of Carson City Half Dollars. Lot:7075
