1873-CC<50C> Arrows MS63 PCGS. The slight weight increase that occurred in 1873 was signified by two small arrowheads on either side of the date, much the same as the similar design change when the weight was reduced two decades earlier. The standard weight of the half dollar was changed from 192 grains to 192.9 grains. At the price of silver in 1873, which was approximately $1.25 per ounce, this change added one-quarter cent to the bullion value of a half dollar. The change was not value oriented, however, but was intended to introduce the metric system to our coinage. The new weight was exactly 12.5 grams. In practice, the legal deviation from standard meant that there really was not any change, as a legal planchet under the old weight standard could be anywhere in the range from 190.5 grains to 193.5 grains.
This Carson City Mint example is a rarity in the series, and is seldom encountered so fine. Both sides have brilliant silver luster with considerable ivory, russet, and blue toning on the obverse. The reverse has only light peripheral gold color. Population: 3 in 63, 12 finer (11/05).
