1873-CC $5 XF45 PCGS. Closed 3, the only dies known. This is a coin that "Mr. 1873" Harry X Boosel would absolutely drool over, a rarity that is nearly engulfed in the veritable sea of coinage that our nation spewed forth in 1873, a total recorded mintage of nearly 28 million coins! The so-called "Crime of '73" legislated the end of two cent pieces, silver trimes and half dimes, introduced the Trade dollar and omitted the (Liberty Seated) silver dollar from the list of authorized coins, while increasing the weight of minor silver coinage, necessitating the Arrows at Date subtype. All of those moves, along with the Closed 3/Open 3 varieties for many coins, ensured that gold coinage would mostly take a back seat to silver for the year, with the double eagle the sole exception. In fact, less than a half-million gold coins of all denominations from the gold dollar through the eagle were produced in this year. Branch mint coinage was particularly hard hit, as the Carson City Mint, busily engaged in producing Seated Liberty, Arrows at Date half dollars and its first Trade silver dollars (among other coins), produced only minuscule amounts of gold half eagles, eagle, and (mostly) double eagles that amounted in toto to 34,369 coins with a face value of $530,710.
The mintage of the 1873-CC Liberty Head half eagle was a paltry 7,416 pieces, and many of those examples circulated extensively, given the understandable need for circulating gold coinage in the West. According to Garrett and Guth, "Many examples are also damaged or heavily cleaned." This piece is a pleasing exception, with only light circulation wear visible over surfaces that retain much luster and some prooflike qualities. A few abrasions and contact marks appear under a loupe, but a surface irregularity between stars 10 and 11 appears to be a planchet flaw, as made. Somewhat lightly struck through the centers, yet still quite rare and attractive. Population: 11 in 45, 7 finer (2/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
