1873-CC $20 MS61 NGC. Winter 1-A, the only known dies. Several small groups of 1873-CC Double Eagles entered the numismatic market during the 1990s. While these coins suffice to make the '73-CC more available than the 1872-CC in an absolute sense, they have had little effect on the rarity of the former issue in Mint State. Approximately 400-500 1873-CC Twenties are believed extant from an original mintage of 22,410 pieces. Through auction appearances and the research presented by Doug Winter and Jim Halperin in the 2001 book Gold Coins of the Carson City Mint, we can confirm the existence of only 11 Mint State examples, each of which is Condition Census: 1. Ex: U.S. Coins (Kenny Duncan); Universal Coin and Bullion (1998); Texas collection. MS63 PCGS. 2. Ex: Various dealers; Oregon collection; New York dealers; Bowers and Merena's sale of 5/1993, lot 2239, where it realized $34,100; Kingswood's sale of 6/1998, lot 738, where it realized $45,650. MS62 PCGS. 3. The present example, prior pedigree unknown. Perhaps this is one of the coins included under # 8 below? 4. Ex: Bowers and Merena's sale of 6/1994, lot 1492, where it realized $13,200. MS60 PCGS. 5. Ex: Central States Signature Sale--The Waldo E. Bolen, Jr. Collection of 1873-CC Coinage (Heritage, 4/1999), lot 5918, where it realized $20,700. MS60 PCGS. 6. Ex: Sotheby's sale of 6/1996, lot 147, where it realized $9,900. MS60 NGC. 7. Ex: FUN Signature Sale--The Eagle Collection (Heritage, 1/2002), lot 4062, where it realized $16,100. MS60 NGC. 8. Four MS60 NGC examples have been sold to collectors by Universal Coin and Bullion since 1996.Well struck by the standards of the Type Two Double Eagle series, this boldly detailed survivor exhibits a bright, orange-gold sheen. Pleasing, yet modest cartwheel effects are seen as the coin rotates under the light. There are no bothersome alloy spots, but small and moderate abrasions pepper both sides. A pinscratch in the left obverse field from before Liberty's nose to star 1 is noted. From the Ashland City Collection.
