<B>1873-CC $20 AU58 NGC.</B></I> A seminal year in U.S. numismatics, 1873 was, among its other claims to fame, the year that gold deposits peaked at the Carson City Mint, at about $5 million. Yet the gold coin mintages were only 10% of that total, as much of the deposit would not be coined until 1874 (Goe, <I>The Mint on Carson Street).</B></I> Carson City produced 22,410 doubles eagles in 1873, all of the Close 3 variety, and many survivors are found quite bagmarked and unattractive, averaging AU50 or so. The present coin shows light evidence of circulation, with a few light scuffs on Liberty's cheek, semiprooflike surfaces, and radiant luster.
