1873-CC $10 AU50 PCGS. Winter 2-B. Two obverse dies and two reverse dies (one of which was first used on the 1870-CC Winter 1-A Eagle) were mated to produce three varieties for the 1873-CC Ten. The present example is most easily identifiable by obverse doubling on the base of the 18 in the date and a reverse die scratch (as produced) through the O in GOD. In addition, there is reverse strike doubling on most of the features at the lower border, and the CC mintmark is farther right than that seen on examples of the Winter 1-A and 2-A varieties. As a date, the 1873-CC is tied with the 1877-CC for fourth rarest honors among Carson City Eagles. In high grades (AU-Mint State), however, the '73-CC is even rarer. Coins that grade as fine as the present example are equally as rare as those of the 1872-CC, both issues ranking second in high grade rarity after the first-year 1870-CC. Whereas most extant '73-CC Eagles are extensively abraded, the coin in the Ashland City Collection is remarkably distraction-free for a frontier era gold coin that saw 10 points of circulation. Virtually all of the abrasions present are wispy and well scattered. The overall striking detail is well above average for this often poorly impressed issue with generally sharp, lightly rubbed features. An aesthetically pleasing, orange-gold example with deeper green-gold undertones and remnants of original luster that are largely confined to the peripheral devices on the reverse. Winter and Halperin (2001) list three AU50 PCGS 1871-CC Eagles in the # 3 and 4 positions on their Condition Census, a fact that confirms similar standing for the present representative. From the Ashland City Collection.
