1873 50C Open 3, No Arrows Fine 15 ANACS. Althoug
1873<50C> Open 3, No Arrows Fine 15 ANACS. Although more than 2.5 million Half Dollars were struck in Philadelphia in 1873, the vast majority of these pieces featured arrows to denote a change in tenor. Among the No Arrows examples, the Closed 3 variety is much more common than its Open 3 counterpart, which is even scarcer than its estimated production of 214,200 pieces. The Wiley-Bugert reference states that the No Arrows, Open 3 variety is High R.5 in all grades, and Low R.7 in Fine and VF condition. This steel-gray example has several cuts in the right obverse field and a pinscratch from the eagle's left wing through the ST of STATES. Still, a very desirable example.
From The Empire State Collection.
